Planet Earth: Land, Water, Sky Review

You guys know I love Science!  I want to share with you a fun middle school Science program from Timberdoodle, Planet Earth: Land, Water, Sky.  Planet Earth is published by Centripetal Press and is recommended for kids ages 12+ or middle school.

Our compact book is 502 pages in length and contains 15 chapters on earth science including topics on our solar system, weather systems, minerals, plate tectonics, volcanoes, earthquakes, and landforms to name a few.  There are a plethora of colorful illustrations and real life photos throughout our text to keep students engaged.

This earth science text is mastery-based.  Instead of cramming or the learn and dump method, the goal is for students to study and prepare in an effort to retain the content they are learning long term.  Because this is a rigorous text, the suggest pace is a bit slower.  It is recommended that students cover ~ 2 chapters a month.

I really like the chapter on matter and minerals.

Our homeschool mineral and rock kit

The experimental investigations in this course allow students to experience hands-on learning.  In the 2nd experimental investigation, students learn about how geologists analyze and identify minerals.  It was fun to break out our mineral and rock kit and look at their various properties as we tried to identify them ourselves.

I appreciate that this course is a slower pace so that students can really study and learn the material.  I'm excited to see what E remembers after we have completed this text and see how well the concepts transferred to her.  I'll keep you posted!

If you are looking for an easy to use science text for your middle school student, we would definitely recommend Timberdoodle's Planet Earth: Land, Water, Sky so far!

Stepping Into Science Review

You guys know I love Science!  I want to share with you a fun product from Timberdoodle, Stepping Into Science.  Stepping Into Science is published by Thames & Kosmos and is recommended for kids ages 5-7+.  This all-in-one kit makes science with your little ones convenient.

The back of our kits has a nice list of its contents.

A peek inside our kit

Using this Science kit, students will study 5 main topics through 29 experiments.  These topics include Biology, Physics, Chemistry, air and water.

G turned 7 last month and he just started 2nd grade!

I am using Stepping Into Science as part of G's 2nd grade curriculum.  I really like the convenience of a grab and go science program.  Apart from common household items like water, vinegar, paper towels, crayons, etc., everything else is included.

In Experiment 6, G learned about spinning colors.

Assembling our spinner

Creating homemade discs for our spinner

About to spin

While spinning

I loved watching this homemade disc spin

In motion

In Experiment 7, G learned about magnifying glasses and how everything looks larger when you use them.

After catching a doodle bug, he watched and observed it move around using our magnifying glass.

Watching his new friend

In Experiments 14 and 15, G learned about hovercrafts and paper airplanes.

Playing with his newly built hovercraft.

And our airplane

Flying our plane and seeing how it does

Since there are 29 experiments,  you can do 1 experiment a week to fill your school year or you can adapt and use it as best fits your needs.  I find that G likes to sit down and do several experiments at one time so that is how we use our kit.  I love that experiments are simple and easy to expand on for kids that want to learn more!  In this particular kit students will learn what makes a magnify glass magnify, how air pressure indicates weather, how suction cups work, why soap bubbles are round, how air resistance depends on an object's size and shape and so much more!  If you are looking for an easy to use, affordable Science kit for your young student, we would definitely recommend Timberdoodle's Stepping Into Science.

Miss PattyCake Christmas Bundle Review

I wanted to share with  you something we have been enjoying this holiday season, the Miss PattyCake Christmas Bundle.  This is a fun, educational, music-filled and God-centered gift set!  It's geared for preschool children and kids up to 6 or 7.  G (age 4) has really been enjoying it.

What's included in our set?  Our set includes a Christmas DVD, which is all about the true story of Christmas and contains lots of music.  Songs include PattyCake Praise, It's Christmas, Handy Helper, What Will The Weather Be?, Mary's Song, Good News, and Hap-Hap-Happy Birthday.  We also have Miss PattyCake Let's Decorate The Tree! book, which is a colorful, rhyming book that uses decorations as a teaching tool to show children about God's love and Jesus' birthday!  And lastly our set contains Miss PattyCake's Christmas Coloring & Activity book.  This book goes right along with our DVD and has fun activities like dot-to-dot, spot the difference, cut and paste, color by number and so on.

Reading Let's Decorate the Tree! with G

G is loving the coloring and activity book.  There are so many fun pages for him to complete.

I love that this set is fun, engaging and most of all Christ-centered.  G is absolutely loving it and I imagine that he is going to have his activity book complete in no time!  I appreciate that there are some parent "extra credit" ideas to complete with G.  Some of these ideas include having a dress-up day with crowns and royal clothing to remember that Jesus is the true King.  Another is to make cookies in the shape of a star to remind us of Jesus.  I plan on doing a few of these next week with him as it is the week of Christmas.  If you are looking for a fun gift set for a preschooler, we would definitely recommend Miss PattyCake and this amazing Christmas Bundle!  You can purchase one here.

Disclosure:  Many thanks to Propeller Consulting, LLC for providing me with this bundle in exchange for this review and post.  Opinions are 100% my own.

Flip Critts Review

We were recently given the opportunity to review Flip Critts!  What's a Flip Critt?  I'm glad you asked.  Flip Critts combine the ease of use of flip flops with the security and durability of a shoe.  They were created and designed by an 11 year old entrepreneur named Carter.  A lot of thought was put into their construction and they were made with "adventurability" in mind.

There are numerous colors available as well as a variety of critters to choose from.  They come in kids sizes as well as adults!

We chose a pair for D in maroon with dolphins on them.

 A close-up of the dolphins

I am so impressed with the construction of D's new shoes.  First, Flip Critts uses a Vibram Sole.  These are the kinds of soles used on hiking and climbing shoes known for their amazing grip.  The midportion or midsole is made of eco-friendly SweetFoam.  I didn't even know what SweetFoam was!  It is made in Brazil from SugarCane and is a fully renewable resource.  The SweetFoam makes the midsole soft and flexible.  It is also water resistant.  Finally, the footbed is made of comfortable memory foam.  I know what memory foam is!  Flip Critts have a unique toe bar that helps keep your shoe on your foot comfortably.

Headed to watch the fireworks.  D quickly put on her Critts before heading out the door.

Check out this short video which includes D doing a roundoff back handspring in her new Critts.  She especially likes that they are easy to put on and comfortable.

Flip Critts are fun, durable and truly unique!  You can check out more about Flip Critts on their Kickstarter Campaign.

You can also engage with Flip Critts @

Disclosure: Huge shout out to Flip Critts for sending me a pair of Flip Critts for D in exchange for our honest review.  All opinions are 100% my own.

Timberdoodle's Fluenz Homeschool Spanish Review

Many of you know that A is about to complete her Sophomore year {just a day or two to go to finish up last minute things}!  I cannot believe how fast time flies.  One of the many requirements for high school is two years of a foreign language.  She started using Timberdoodle's Fluenz Homeschool Spanish as her foreign language this school year and she says that she enjoyed it and it challenged her to work hard.  I like that this is a self-paced course so if you need extra time you have it.  I think that is especially important when learning a new language as it will come faster to some and slower to others.

I want to share something with you now that I didn't know when A began this course.  Fluenz Homeschool Spanish covers both years of high school Spanish!  This is awesome.  She thought she had to complete the whole program this year (and so did I) so we were so excited to find this information out.  Your student will need to complete Level 1+2 and the first half of Level 3 for their Spanish 1 requirement and the remainder through Level 5 for their Spanish 2 requirement (I hope knowing this helps you!).  A is already into the 4th Level so she will take a break and pick back up in the next school year.  I will probably have her refresh herself with the material before jumping back in.

 A working on Spanish

For those wondering, there were six different language options available for her to choose from: Spanish (Latin America), Portuguese, Italian, French, Mandarin and German.  She chose Spanish as we both thought it might be more useful living in Texas.

One of the best ways to learn a foreign language is immersion.  Fluenz is specifically designed to help teach common immersion situations in another country.  It gives practical and useful dialog that you would use in daily interactions.  Fluenz is great because it teaches listening, speaking, grammar, writing and reading in your chosen foreign language.  This set up feels like a private class.

Here are the levels. When you click on the level it gives you the level progress, above you can see that Level 3 has 98.3%.

Fluenz Homeschool Spanish is broken into 5 different levels simply called Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5.  And each level is broken down into sessions.  And inside each session are workouts and exercises.

Above you can see the first few sessions for Level 1 as well as content covered.

Level 1 has 30 sessions.

Here is another way to view Level 1.  You can see that there are 30 sessions and get the overall topics covered - greetings, ordering coffee at the cafe, ordering at the restaurant, where are they?, on the phone with a friend, etc.

The rest of the topics covered for Level 1 (ending with where is the subway station?).  Another thing to note above is that there are progress markers that show you exactly where you are in the program.  This is a great feature.

Throughout this program instructors appear in videos to explain grammar.  They also define terms and vocabulary and share numerous aspects of the language so students don't have to guess at words and their meanings through content alone.

Each session has a short introductory video for the upcoming lessons.  The workouts inside the session introduce you to the new material.  Review videos help you learn and retain the information.  Many of the exercises and workouts start with a dialogue that the students should play 3 times.

There are 3 ways to watch the dialogues:  Spanish subtitles, Spanish and English subtitles, and no subtitles.  Again, it is recommended to watch them all three ways.

Above is an example with both subtitles.

The dialogue will then appear in writing, speaking, and listening exercises after this.  In the exercises students might have to type or translate a word or phrase or they might see a list of words/phrases/sentences in Spanish and English and have to match the two that are saying the same thing together.  I really like all the video lessons throughout that really help break down the information being taught.  And all the fun, interactive exercises are a huge part of this program.  I would say that this is definitely a thorough program with lots of content.

Another thing worth noting is the ability to sync across multiple devices meaning you can use it on your desktop, iPad, iPhone, Android device, etc.  The ability to jump from desktop to mobile device is a plus.

Features of Fluenz - You have access to Fluenz online, Fluenz flashcards, Fluenz commons, Fluenz mobile, Audio component and Fluenz Immersion.

In the audio component you can choose your level and whether you want pronunciation or comprehension.

When making flashcards you can choose the Level, which sessions you want included (including selecting multiple sessions), along with other options.

An example of a created flashcard.

Fluenz License for 3 students
{Above you can see I still have 2 licenses to assign as A is already using the 3rd}

Another huge feature with the Fluenz Homeschool version is that I can use it with 3 students!  A has been my only student in this program right now but I do plan to start using this with B in the next year or so as she enters high school.  I will most likely use it with C as well.  I feel like this feature gives you more bang for your buck with the ability to use this program with 3 students along with the fact that it counts for 2 years of language.

 A peek at our dashboard

My dashboard allows me to manage A's progress and track various data (time spent in lessons, percentage of correct answers, amount of exercises completed, overall grade, etc.).  I have a little hiccup in my Fluenz dashboard because apparently I made A the parent when I registered her to begin her class.  I don't want to change this at the moment as I will lose her progress so I will wait until she completes the course to remedy this.  For now, I can just view her dashboard as if it was mine and it has all the information I need.  If you are looking for a high school foreign language option for your homeschooler, you should check out Timberdoodle's Fluenz Homeschool Spanish as it has been a great addition to our homeschool.

Disclosure:  Huge shout out to Timberdoodle for selecting me as a Timberdoodle Blogger.  Timberdoodle sent my family Fluenz Homeschool Spanish for a discounted price in exchange for our honest review.  All opinions are my own.
