I have something to share with you today from Timberdoodle, the Wile E. Coyote Physical Science Genius 4 Book Set! Our set includes Zoom! Wile E. Coyote with Speed and Velocity, Whoosh! Wile E. Coyote with Flight and Gravity, Thud! Wile E. Coyote Experiments with Forces and Motion and Smash! Wile E. Coyote Experiments with Simple Machines {I highlighted small portions of each title for reference later}. All four titles are written by Mark Weakland. While Thud! and Smash! are illustrated by Christian Cornia, Whoosh! is illustrated by Alan Brown and Zoom! is illustrated by Paco Sordo.
D with our books.
And E with our books.
First I had to introduce the kids to Wile E. Coyote. If you are not familiar with him, Wile E. Coyote has been trying to capture the elusive Road Runner since 1948 using complex contraptions. This classic cartoon from Warner Bros. is known for breaking the laws of Physics! I remember watching his hilarious antics when I was a kid. Watch the clip below to see what I mean.
This set explains the science behind Wile E. Coyote's failed catch attempts and it is such a fun way to look at science. Our books are short (32 pages each) and include a Table of Contents, Glossary, Read More Section, Internet Sites Section and an Index. And of course they are filled with fun illustrations of Wile E. Coyote, Road Runner and lots of science.
Table of Contents for Smash! While Smash! has five chapters, the other four books contain four chapters.
In Smash! readers will learn about work, levers and fulcrums, force, inclines, gravity, wheels and axles, pulleys and so much more!
Here is the introduction.
I personally really appreciate the extra sections at the end of the book. These help readers understand terms, know where to go to find out more and how to locate specific topics in the books with the index.
The index for Smash!.
In Zoom! readers will learn about speed, velocity, acceleration, deceleration, displacement and more. In Whoosh! readers will learn about gravity, speed, velocity, acceleration, air speed and lift, drag and thrust and more. And in Thud! readers will learn about Newton's Three Laws of Motion, gravity, air resistance, acceleration, momentum, friction, and so much more! These are stand alone books (which is why you see some of the topics repeated above) but I love having the entire set.
If you can't tell, these small books have a graphic novel feel to them and the girls have really enjoyed reading them. They are small enough that the girls had no problem reading them on their own. I love having them for quick reference books as we learn more and more about science through the years.
This set is currently included in Timberdoodle's 2nd grade curriculum kit
and we definitely recommend it. I love that it has the kids really thinking about scientific application in these exaggerated situations. They may never watch cartoons again the same way 😉.
Disclosure:
Huge shout out to Timberdoodle for selecting me as a Timberdoodle
Blogger. I received this book set at a discount in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
