Timberdoodle's 101 Doodle Definitions Review

101 Doodle Definitions by Deborah Zemke

I have another item to share with you from Timberdoodle, 101 Doodle Definitions.  This is a super fun way to teach children word definitions.  Instead of having to memorize unfamiliar words, the student will draw a picture to remind them of a word and they will more readily remember the word's meaning (Don't Just Memorize, Visualize!).  This mnemonic approach to learning and remembering word definitions covers 101 of the most-used words on standardized tests.  I think this is a clever way to teach children vocabulary.  After working through this book, students can then use the knowledge they acquire to make their own unique doodles for other unfamiliar words they come across.  I love this learn and apply technique and think it has huge value.

The end of the book has bonuses for the kids to complete.

As I said previously, this book contains 101 of the most-used words on standardized tests.  One of the hardest decisions for me was who I should have use this book.  Instead of having one child work through it, I decided to let several of the kids use it (B, C, and D) for different words as I think all of them will benefit from the concepts and ideas taught.

 D with her completed hexapod.

And here you see her completed doodle for hostility.

C  with one of his completed words, vaporize.

And another word doodle, writhe

B with one of her completed words, buoyant

 gluttonous doodle

 B with her yearling doodle.

A close-up view of one of my favorites, B's yearling doodle.

The words are ordered alphabetically (beginning with acme and ending with zenith), one word to a page.  Each page gives you the word, its part of speech, its definition, and the instructions for drawing the corresponding doodle.  There are 8 do-it-yourself Bonus doodle opportunities at the back of the book.  B, C and D were able to use this book with no problems, the instructions were great.  It is easy to use and it doesn't take a ton of time to learn new words.  It's also fun.  I'm looking forward to seeing how they apply this concept as they continue to increase their vocabulary.

You can see 101 Doodle Definitions circled in red in the top left corner.

101 Doodle Definitions is a part of Timberdoodle's 5th Grade Curriculum Kit.  This book is recommended for 10+ and is not a faith-based product.

Disclosure:  Huge shout out to Timberdoodle for selecting me as a Timberdoodle Blogger.  Timberdoodle sent my family the 101 Doodle Definitions for a discounted price in exchange for our honest review.  All opinions are my own.

This is a great idea! Learning combined with fun and memory hooks means they will remember. I love it.
