I have been so blessed to receive the PRIDE Yellow Book Program Kit - Level 1 to use with F (age 6, grade K) from PRIDE Reading Program.  The PRIDE Reading Program is an Orton Gillingham curriculum that is easy to use with structured literacy and can be used for all ages.  It helps teach reading, writing, spelling, and comprehension with multisensory methods.

First things first.  What does Orton Gillingham mean?  I want to address this because prior to this program I had never heard of it.  The Orton Gillingham method is a unique approach used to teach students that may be struggling in spelling and reading.  It's primarily used for dyslexic students and those with reading disabilities but it will work for all students.  It's often used one-on-one.  It's structured so there is a lot of routine in how concepts are taught.  It's sequential, so students have to master skills before moving on.  It's cumulative in that lessons are built on previously learned information.  There is also review and reinforcement within the program.  It's explicit so there is direct teaching of the rules and patterns of decoding and encoding.  It's multisensory so visual, auditory and kinesthetic.  And it has systematic phonics beginning with the most basic phonics skills developing into the most advanced spelling rules.  That's Orton Gillingham in the best nut-shell I can muster.

In order to determine what level I should use with F, I had him take the PRIDE placement assessment.

F taking his assessment.

In the test, F was asked about a variety of different letters and their sounds.  He had to do letter recognition as well as write the letter based on the sound it made.  Based on his test, F was placed in the Yellow Book Program Kit - Level 1, see below.

With a score of 3, F was recommended to start in the Yellow Program.

While waiting for our program to come in the mail, I took an online training course to understand and prepare for using this program with F.  It took a few hours to complete and I thought it was super helpful to better understand how the program works and how to use it.  I'm so thankful for this part of the program!

Our PRIDE Yellow Book Program Kit - Level 1

What does our kit include?  Our kit includes the PRIDE yellow student workbook, PRIDE sound cards, PRIDE letter tiles, and a PRIDE activity kit (whiteboard, read and black dry erase markers, eraser, reading tracker, game dice and PRIDE tote bag).  The teaching guide is online and it is 100% scripted and easy to follow.  This step-by-step online guide walks you through the skills to teach and when and how to teach them.  I really appreciate that this is all laid out for you as it makes it much simpler to use and teach.

Each skill is divided into 3 lessons:  introduction lesson, practice lesson, and reinforcement lesson.  Each one of these can be taught in 1 hour blocks or shorter.  There is a short assessment at the end of the reinforcement lesson that students need to score 80% or higher on in order to move onto the next skill.  This is really important because the PRIDE program is taught as a step-by-step progression.  You cannot use this program without the online teaching guide - it is key!

We have not completed our PRIDE level yet but on average it can take a student 30-60 hours to complete depending on the student and the level.  You follow the scripts and let your student move at their own pace - it shouldn't feel stressful.  F just turned 6 in January and to my knowledge he doesn't have any delays or struggles.  We are moving at a slower pace than I expected but I'm okay with that.  He is having a great time and I am amazed at how well he is responding to this program!  His reading has improved and his confidence has grown rapidly.  I would definitely recommend this program.
